Success in obtaining significant photocurrents with polycrystalline, SiO/sub 2/-doped ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ photoanodes gave rise to a study of the photoelectrochemical properties of other group IVA elements as dopants. Recently, photochemical properties of SnO/sub 2/- and CaO-doped ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ electrodes were investigated elsewhere but only 1 and 5% doping levels were studied. In the present work ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ material was mixed with 0.002-5 at.% GeO/sub 2/ and SnO/sub 2/ and with 0.01-5 at.% (initial composition) PbO/sub 2/. Emission spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to check the initial and final doping levels and for the possible presence of two-phase materials. Photoelectrochemical results were compared to those obtained at Si(IV)- and TI(IV)-doped ..cap alpha..-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ electrodes.
