Health-hazard evaluation determination report No. 75-151-259, Winchester Hospital, Winchester, Massachusetts

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6084653

A health-hazard evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on September 29-30 and October 1, 1975 at the Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Massachusetts to determine the concentrations of waste anesthetic gases and vapors to which operating-room personnel were being exposed. On the basis of environmental sampling, it was determined that concentrations of nitrous oxide measured in the operating rooms, greatly exceeded 30 ppm and that the concentrations of halothane were usually in excess of the 0.5 ppm level. The existing scavenging system absorbs the halothane vapors but not the nitrous oxide. Recommendations are made for effective control of both anesthetics.
