Reductive quenching of Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ at high pressures
The reductive quenching of Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +/ bu several aromatic amines was studied at higher pressures (0.1-300 MPa) in acetonitrile (CH/sub 3/CN) and n-butyl alcohol (n-BuOH). The luminescence lifetimes are lengthened with increasing pressures. This results in positive activation volumes for the quenching rate constants k/sub q/ ranging in value from approx. = 1 mL/mol for dimethylaniline quencher in CH/sub 3/CN to 13 mL/mol for benzidine in n-BuOH at 25/sup 0/C range. The pressure dependence of k/sub q/ for Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 2 +//DMA in CH/sub 3/CN was insensitive to temperature in the 15-45/sup 0/C range. The pressure results are discussed in terms of the commonly accepted mechanism for electron transfer in the activation- and diffusion-controlled limits.
