The planning and construction of Mt. Gunnison mine in Colorado is described. The mine is in a complex geological terrain at an elevation of nearly 6500 ft. At present a 7 ft seam of high quality steam coal is being worked by room-and-pillar methods. Initial output is planned for 1.4 million tons a year, increasing eventually to 2.8 million tons.
