The NEXAFS of C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ adsorbed on Ni(111) and Ni(110) surfaces have been measured at room temperature under similar conditions. It is found that the structure and bonding of the surface species on both surfaces are essentially the same as that reported previously for C/sub 2/H/sub 4//Ni(111). The surface species has a ''C/sub 2/'' framework, which lies flat on the surface with a relaxed carbon--carbon bond. A di-sigma configuration is proposed for the adsorbate which would have a twofold orientation symmetry on Ni(110). The implications of the twofold orientation symmetry in the case of C/sub 2/H/sub 4//Ni(110) for the azimuthal dependence of NEXAFS and the significance of the overall observation for the surface chemistry of these crystals are discussed.
