Association of polyelectrolytes with oppositely charged mixed micelles

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)
Dilute solutions of polymers and micelles are used conjointly in enhanced oil recovery. The rheological and surface properties of these fluids reflect, to some extent, the state of association. Phase separation among mixtures of a strong polycation (poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride)) with a nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100) and an anionic surfactant (sodium decyl sulfate) in the presence of sodium chloride was studied. Variations were found corresponding to adjustments of average micelle surface charge density. Conditions corresponding to incipient phase separation were of special interest. Results were consistent with the phenomenon of intrapolymer condensation of micelles. 16 references.
