The general economic recession appears to have a moderating influence on new plant construction in the USA and Europe, although in other parts of the world construction of new plants is continuing at a fairly rapid pace. However many plants in the USA are being modified and research in coal preparation continues at a high level. Advances in coal preparation are discussed. Jigs are compared with dense media processes and the problem of large percentages of fines is dealt with. It has been discovered that a substantial amount of a plant's coal losses can be attributed to improper froth flotation. Consequently froth flotation techniques are being investigated and substantial improvements are reported. A froth flotation process for cleaning high pyrite content coals is described. Other methods for coal cleaning are considered including bulk oil flotation, hydrocyclones, dense media cyclones, and magnetic and electrostatic separation. Brief mention is given to coal handling, dewatering, and water clarification.
