Decay of mass-separated /sup 156/Yb
The isotope /sup 156/Yb was produced via the /sup 147/Sm(/sup 16/O,7n) reaction and was mass separated with an on-line isotope separator. Its decay properties were studied by using ..gamma..-ray, x-ray, and ..cap alpha..-particle detectors. The half-life and ..cap alpha.. decay energy extracted were found to agree with values from earlier ..cap alpha..-decay investigations. In addition, the (EC+..beta../sup +/) decay of /sup 156/Yb was identified for the first time. This decay to /sup 156/Tm is accompanied by only one strong ..gamma.. ray, an E1 transition of 115.2 +- 0.2 keV. It is proposed that, as in the case of the /sup 148,150,152/Dy decays to odd-odd terbium nuclei, essentially all of the /sup 156/Yb ..beta.. decay proceeds to a 1/sup +/ level in /sup 156/Tm at approx.115 keV by an allowed transition, logftapprox.3.9. This 1/sup +/ level then depopulates to a 2/sup -/ at or near the ground state. Alpha-decay branching ratios were deduced for /sup 156/Yb, /sup 156/Tm, /sup 152/Er, and /sup 152/Ho.
