An investigation of Kuznetsk coal vitrinites by the FCBIR spectroscopy method

This approach provides more accurate information on the absorption of oxygen-containing groups than is normally available from IR methods. With increasing rank, the coals tend to contain decreasing carboxylic and ether groups, accompanied by diminishing role of the hydrogen bonds. Internal reflection spectroscopy enables the nature of internal and surface groups within the coal to be differentiated more closely. The presence of bands at 1600 - 1660 cm/sup -1/, coupled with an increase in background absorption with increasing rank, suggest that coal structure is characterised by systems of conjugate non-aromatic bonds.
