Soybean oil esters as alternative diesel fuels

200-hr fuel-screening tests were performed on a direct injection, turbocharged diesel engine using ethyl, methyl, and butyl esters of soybean oil and reference diesel fuel. Performance and engine wear were similar for all fuels with emissions data revealing higher nitrous oxide levels for the ester fuels.
