Kinetics of acid-phase fermentation in anaerobic digestion

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6074981
Acid-phase fermentation of organic feeds is important not only because it is a key step in anaerobic digestion, but also because it can generate a variety of acids that are used as industrial intermediates or can serve as feeds for hydrocarbon production. In this research, dominant cultures of acid-formers containing acidogenic and acetogenic organisms were established on glucose and sewage sludge by appropriate manipulation of the digester HRT and organic loading. Kinetic models were developed to describe the product formation rate and efficiency and to determine process kinetic constants by analysis of the collected digestion data.
