Furnas Centrais Eletricas SA, Brazil's regional state power company, is presently, planning to award a turnkey contract or contracts for the engineering, manufacturing, and installations of 4 bipolar ac/dc converter stations expected to cost between $700 million and $1 billion. Two stations would be located at the Itaipu hydro project and the other two stations would be located 500 miles away in southern Brazil. The qualifications of the US, Swedish, and German companies vying for the contracts are briefly reviewed. Operational startup is planned for 1983, to coincide with the inauguration of Itaipu's first generators. (MCW)
