Intake system for an internal combustion engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6074059
This patent describes an intake system for an internal combustion engine consisting of a number of interacting component parts. The first component described is an air cleaner having an inlet and first and second outlets on opposite sides of a housing containing a chamber element of the cleaner that directly communicates with the outlets. Two elements that are configured closely are a main intake passageway connecting the first outlet of the air cleaner to the engine and a throttle valve located in this passageway. Also characterized in the patent is a second intake passageway of predetermined diameter and hence volume having a first end connected to the second outlet of the air cleaner such that the second intake passageway is in fluidic communication with the air cleaner chamber and having a second end connected to the main intake passageway. A principal feature of the patent which is detailed is a control means, responsive to a sensor means detection of engine operating conditions, for opening and shutting fluidic communication between the second intake passageway and the main intake passageway. The predetermined volume of the second intake passageway such that the main intake passageway is resonantly effected depending on communication conditions and effective pipe length between the two.
