Five metal oxide sorbents were selected for laboratory-scale testing of their sulfur removal characteristics, sulfur removal capacities, and elemental sulfur production capabilities for use in the high-temperature sulfur removal process. These were (1) manganous oxide, MnO; (2) cobalt aluminate, CoAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/; (3) iron chromite, FeCr/sub 2/O/sub 4/; (4) iron orthosilicate, Fe/sub 2/SiO/sub 4/; and (5) cobalt titanate, Co/sub 2/TiO/sub 4/. Laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor studies in a 1-inch OD Schedule 40 refractory-lined 316SS reactor were completed this quarter with the cobalt aluminate and manganous oxide sorbents. Both sorbents exhibited useful sulfur removal capacities. However, neither sorbent produced elemental sulfur during regeneration in the proportions expected. Two molten alkali carbonate mixtures were selected for laboratory-scale testing of their HCl removal capabilities at 1200/sup 0/F. The molten alkali mixtures chosen were a 52% lithium carbonate/48% sodium carbonate mixture and a 43% lithium carbonate/57% potassium carbonate mixture with melting points of 925/sup 0/ and 910/sup 0/F, respectively. The porous ceramic selected for supporting the molten carbonate mixtures was magnesia, MgO. Several cylindrical pellets of the MgO-supported 52% lithium/48% sodium carbonate mixture were prepared and characterized this quarter. Several alkali-carbonate-containing ceramic pellets from the IGT thermal energy storage program were also secured for testing purposes. This included Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3//MgO and Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3//NaAlO/sub 2/ pellets and an NaAlO/sub 2/-supported 52% lithium/48% sodium molten carbonate mixture. These pellets will be useful for comparison testing. Progress was also made this quarter in assembling the supporting equipment.
