Effect of probe geometry on push-out test results in some SiC/borosilicate glass composites

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (United States)

Single fiber push-out tests were conducted on three SiC/borosilicate glass composites using both Vickers pyramid and flat bottomed loading probes. The matrices were chosen so as to vary the residual interfacial (radial) stress from tension to compression. Four thicknesses of each specimen were tested. It was found that the Vickers indenter damages the fiber and under some conditions induces cracks in the matrix. The flat bottomed loading probe, on the other hand, caused no damage to either fiber or matrix. The peak loads were, however, the same and the load-deflection curves similar, indicating that the two types of probes can be used interchangeably. 11 refs.
