This paper examines admissible boundary conditions for the quasigeostrophic psi equations that govern ageostrophic motion. Both the essential (Dirichlet-type) and natural (Neumann-type) admissible boundary conditions are derived from the variational formulations of the psi equations. Different ways of extracting the admissible boundary values from observational data are proposed. 21 refs.
