Tampering with auto emissions

Tampering with automobile emission control systems by using leaded fuels or changing the recirculation, fuel/air mixture screws, or the vacuum spark retard defeats the effort to improve air quality and contributes to ozone, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide pollution. The worst offense is fuel switching because it ruins the catalytic converter. Motorists mistakingly hoping to improve their car's performance are not aware that the pollution-control equipment can be damaged or overworked and will keep urban cars from passing mandatory auto exhaust inspection and maintenance programs. Recent fuel substitution has been prompted by economics, although the long-term effects to the engine will be more costly. DOE-produced regulations are designed to eliminate incentives to switch fuels and to promote engine tuning rather than emission-control tampering to improve efficiency.
