Oil shale: Rio Blanco tests underground retorting

Journal Article · · Orange Disc; (United States)
OSTI ID:6069224
Underground oil shale retorting is being tested in Piceance Creek Basin in west Colorado. Retort one is 371 ft high and 60 ft square, and its floor lies 834 ft below the ground surface. Rubbled shale containing kerogen will start burning in the chamber in April 1981, from top ignition. Heat generated by the burn is expected to produce approximately 10,000 bbl of raw shale oil, some of it as vapor that will be condensed and recovered. The purpose of the experiment is to assess the commercial feasibility of modified in situ technology to recover oil from shale containing kerogen.
