Flywheel energy storage and conversion system for photovoltaic applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6069167
A flywheel energy storage and conversion system has been designed and is now being built at Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Lincoln Laboratory for the United States Department of Energy. It is intended to serve as an interface between a solar photovoltaic array and an ac load, providing output waveform regulation as well as energy storage. Important characteristics include magnetic bearings, an ironless armature motor-generator, and a low-cost flywheel rotor. The system design tradeoffs are described, and a preliminary economic analysis is presented.
