The results of a {sup 13}C NMR study on the dynamics of the UO{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 3}{sup 4{minus}}{minus}CO{sub 3}{sup 2{minus}} system in aqueous solutions are reported herein. From a combination of {sup 13}C NMR spectral data and potentiometry at a pH > 7, two exchange processes are thought to occur. The first exchange, H{sup +}+CO{sub 3}{sup 2{minus}} = HCO{sub 3}{sup {minus}}, does not seem to affect the exchange broadening in the UO{sub 2}(CO{sub 3}){sub 3}{sup 4{minus}} system, and the second process is the exchange between the complexes and the free carbonate. From the reaction constants calculated for the two processes, it is noted that a simple two-site exchange model is applicable to the system. At pH values lower that 8.6, the exchange is considerably higher, and a different exchange rate is believed to dominate the system. 20 refs., 5 figs.
