District heating conference presents progress - and problems

The European Union of Heat Producers and Distributors (UNICHAL), founded in 1954 as an association of district-heating managers, is important because district heating - with or without co-generation - lowers the demand for electricity and interferes with those who would pursue an expanded nuclear option. UNICHAL represents over a hundred cities with experience in district heating. Only one paper in the recent conference addressed the importance of district heating and the need to relinquish the free choice between fuels. Summaries of the technical sessions cover the world picture, nuclear power and fuel substitutions, the US experience, schemes for Swedish solar designs, and fluidized-bed boilers in conjunction with district heating.
