A method suitable to experimental research of brittle fracture is discussed. Using the Muskhelishvili method, the authors solve the elastic plane stress state in a circular disk containing a crack symmetrical to its center, which is compressed by 2 forces acting along the crack. On this basis, the condition of critical equilibrium state is formulated. The breaking force for concrete specimens was measured, each specimen containing a crack, and the Barenblatt modulus of cohesion was estimated. It should be noted that the modulus of cohesion is identical up to a multiplying constant with the Griffith-Irwin stress intensity factor. The Barenblatt theory of cohesive forces acting at the edges of cracks was submitted to a critical analysis in papers by G.P. Cherepanov and D.D. Ivlev (Inzh. Zh. Mekh. Tverdogo Tela No. 6, pp 86-94, 1967).
