The ASHRAE clear sky model-an evaluation

Journal Article · · ASHRAE Trans.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6066637

Using hourly data collected during 1977 at 31 NOAA solar monitoring stations, the general validity of the ASHRAE approach to estimating solar radiation under cloudless conditions has been confirmed. The comparative superiority of an alternative version of the ASHRAE model, using elevationcorrected optical air mass rather than the clearness number concept, has also been demonstrated. The revised model allows for decreased attenuation due to all relevant atmospheric constituents with increased station elevations and provides for the extension of the ASHRAE technique to sites other than those for which clearness numbers are available.
