The efficiency is assessed of various energy alternatives to petroleum for automotive fuels including coal, oil shale, organic waste products and biomass. The energy efficiency of various resource conversion to end-use paths is examined. Such systems comprise: extraction, upgrading, or collection of the raw resource; conversion of the crude to a usable transportation fuel; distribution of the fuel; and likely uses of a particular fuel. New technology in engine design is discussed in the context of fuel compatibility, comparative evaluations are made between diesel, spark ignition and electric engines. The authors conclude that substituting light distillates for gasoline will reduce energy use. However, the production of gasoline and light distillates from any resource is interdependent; the production of one implies the production of another. Therefore, a multifuel scenario is most likely. 26 references.
