Relationship between the chemical extractability of several transuranic elements from soils and their uptake by wheat plants

Journal Article · · Soil Sci.; (United States)
We studied the relationship between chemical extractability and wheat plant uptake of /sup 237/Np, /sup 239/ /sup 240/Pu, /sup 241/Am, and /sup 244/Cm from seven widely different kinds of soils. The chemical extractants used were distilled H/sub 2/O, 0.05 M CaCl/sub 2/, and 1 M NH/sub 4/OAc. The relative order of magnitude of /sup 237/Np extractability by the extractants was H/sub 2/O < CaCl/sub 2/ < NH/sub 4/OAc. The relative order of magnitude of /sup 239/ /sup 240/Pu, /sup 241/Am, and /sup 244/Cm extractabilities were generally H/sub 2/O, CaCl/sub 2/ < NH/sub 4/OAc. The amount of the extractable fraction of each tracer nuclide was conditioned by soil type. The /sup 241/Am and /sup 244/Cm uptake by wheat plants correlated with the extractability of these nuclides by H/sub 2/O, CaCl/sub 2/, and NH/sub 4/OAc at the 5 percent level of significance or better. The /sup 237/Np uptake by the plants correlated with its extractability of CaCl/sub 2/ and NH/sub 4/OAc, but not by using H/sub 2/O.
