Toxicology and biological monitoring of metals in humans

Book ·
OSTI ID:6064492
This work is an attempt to summarize the mammalian toxicology of the metals, metalloids, and lanthanides for which some toxicity other than radiation effects might be expected. The book begins with a table summarizing the toxic effects and blood/urine concentrations which have been noted at various levels of exposure to the elements studied. Each element then is profiled individually in terms of its occurrence and production, uses, chemical/physical properties, exposure levels/limits, toxicokinetics, and health effects. This volume was intended to serve as a complete and concise source of toxicological, exposure, and monitoring information on metals. The format works well for chemical, physical, and exposure data, but falls far short in the area of toxicology. Toxicity data were obtained from a handful of secondary sources and then condensed to such an extent that much of the information is misleading. Two examples of this are (1) the failure to distinguish between the health effects of inorganic and organic lead, and (2) a three-sentence paragraph describing a quite controversial subject - the carcinogenicity of chromium compounds.
