The drag reduction anomaly associated with turbulent flow of certain dilute high molecular weight polymer solutions has been shown to be a wall-controlled phenomenon. Accordingly, several investigators have undertaken studies of the influence of drag-reducing agents on turbulence within the wall region by the use of flush-mounted electrochemical and surface temperature probes. These techniques have provided useful information pertaining to the character of turbulent steady flow with and without drag-reducing additives. The use of similar flush-mounted anemometer probes is discussed in connection with turbulent steady and pulsatile tube flow of dilute drag-reducing solutions. Results are presented for measured mean friction factors, f, and mean time periods, tau, of the wall turbulence structure associated with steady and pulsatile flow of Newtonian fluids and drag-reducing solutions. A diagram shows the experimental apparatus used. (20 refs.)
