Coal ash utilization: fly ash, bottom ash and slag

Book ·
OSTI ID:6063351
Ash is a waste product left after the burning of many combustible substances, and fly ash is the accepted term for the finely divided residue that results from the combustion of ground coal. It is easily disseminated by flue gases, unless checked and collected by suitable devices. Energy and environmental considerations over the coming years point to greater use of coal. As more utilities are forced to shift from gas and oil to coal as a source for fuel, the available quantities of fly ash will increase. This book shows how millions of tons of fly ash and other ashes can be disposed of annually in an environmentally acceptable manner. There is, for instance, a well-developed technology using lime and fly ash aggregates in pavements, buildings and brige construction. The book is based mostly on federally funded studies as listed in the bibliography at the end of the volume. A partial and condensed table of contents includes: coal ash characterization; ash as raw material; ash in structural fill; fly ash concrete; lightweight aggregates; materials for roads; land reclamation and soil modification; fly ash bricks; recovery of mineral values.
