K/sub. cap alpha. / satellite spectra as diagnostics for particle beam-target interaction

Spectrometry of K/sub ..cap alpha../ radiation emitted during the interaction of an intense particle beam with matter is proposed as a diagnostic. Temperature measurement is possible through the detailed analysis of the K/sub ..cap alpha../ satellite spectrum. The role of line self-absorption for this and other K/sub ..cap alpha../ measurements is discussed. The feasibility of such measurements is demonstrated in an electron beam-target interaction experiment.
