Multipurpose fixed-gravity structure aimed at producing, exporting oil in deep frozen seas

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6063121

Unlike the existing concrete gravity deep sea structures, GREAT has a small draft when floated out of the fabrication yard and towed to the site. Consequently: The fabrication yard can be located almost anywhere, without the need for a nearby fjord. The towing power can be relatively low and the towing speed relatively high. Therefore, a long tow from the fabrication yard to the installation site is acceptable, enabling selection of the best fabrication facilities. The water depth is not a governing factor when selecting the towing route. Additionally, a fully rigged platform is connected to the structural body and is kept near horizontal at the various assembly, towing, and installation stages. The installation method, with sequential ballasting and tilting, plus bottom dragging for adjustment, has not yet been used with deep sea fixed gravity structures. However, it proved successful when articulated columns were installed in deep North Sea waters.
