Air pollution is known to cause leaf roll necrosis in lilacs. The identity of the specific pollutant which causes this syndrome is not yet established. Differences in susceptibility are known, and the cultivars which are more resistant are listed. It is recommended that the more tolerant cultivars be used for urban planting, as they will have the best chance of being successful in that environment.
