Emission of electromagnetic radiation during filamentation in relativistic nuclear collisions
The possibility of detecting the filamentation instability in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions by detecting the attendant ..gamma..-ray emission is investigated. A simple participant-spectator model is used to calculate the ..gamma..-ray yield due to filamentation in symmetric nuclear collisions, and to estimate the ..gamma..-ray background. It is shown that the filamentation ..gamma..-rays take the form of a narrow peak at 90/degree/ to the beam axis in the center-of-mass system of the nuclei. This peak appears against a strong anisotropic ..gamma..-ray background that has a deep /ital minimum/ at the center-of-mass angle of 90/degree/. The experimental conditions necessary for the observation of the filamentation peak are discussed.
