Sodium-nitrogen correlation within globular clusters

A spectroscopic survey of nine nitrogen-rich/nitrogen-poor pairs of giants in five globular clusters has been made to ascertain if there is a positive correlation between the behavior of the Na I D lines and the abundance of nitrogen as is known to exist in 47 Tuc and NGC 6752. In eight of the nine pairs (in the clusters M3, M4, M5, M13, and M92) a positive correlation is found. A differential LTE model atmosphere analysis shows that on average the nitrogen-rich objects are enhanced in sodium by approx.0.5 dex relative to their nitrogen-poor counterparts.
