Anaerobic biological treatment of coal gasifier effluent

Conference · · Biotechnol. Bioeng. Symp.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6061172
An anaerobic reactor system consisting of two columns in series, containing Raschig rings and granular activated carbon, respectively, has been acclimated to operate on dilute coal gasification wastewater. The system has been successfully operated at loadings of 2.5 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m/sup 3/d resulting in removals as high as 92% COD, 78% total organic carbon (TOC), 93% phenol, and 99% cresol. Methane gas was generated at a rate of 3.6 to 8.1 L/d. The effluent from the anaerobic system was treated in an aerobic nitrifying system for ammonia removal. Complete conversion of ammonia-nitrogen to nitrate-nitrogen occurred with further reduction in COD and TOC of 74 and 85%, respectively. 12 figures, 3 tables.
