Iron County, Texas is located along the Eastern Shelf of the Midland basin. The Pennsylvanian Canyon sands in this area were deposited as a sequence of deep water slope sands interbedded with basinal shales. Authigenic illite-smectite clays are often present and lower resistivity masking the productive potential of the Canyon sands. During drilling of the example well gas kicks were noted over an interval from 5,860 feet to 6,000 feet, however, samples shown were poor. The well logs indicated nine low resistivity sands over the 5,860 to 6,000 foot interval. Due to the poor shows and the low resistivity of the sands the well was plugged. Computer assisted log analysis was used determine: (1) the formation water resistivity (RW), (2) the volume of clay (Vcl), (3) the clay distribution, (4) if permeable reservoirs are present, and (5) to distinguish hydrocarbon from water productive zones. They type of clay distribution (dispersed) was determined by Vcl (sp) versus Vcl (gr) and Dual water versus Fertl Shaly Sand crossplots. The presence of permeable reservoirs was determined by a shaly sand producibility plot (Q-plot). Hydrocarbon versus water productive zones were differentiated by a series of crossplots. The verification of the gas shows by log analysis indicates a potential productive series of Canyon sands up dip to the east of the example well.
