Summary of INEL waste reduction/treatment facilities: SWEPP, PREPP, WERF

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6058062

The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) is currently designing and constructing two pilot plants to demonstrate methods for retrieving, processing, and certifying the stored TRU waste for shipment and experimental disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Waste retrieval, examination, certification, and preparation for shipment will be performed at the Stored Waste Examination Pilot Plant (SWEPP). The waste processing activities will be performed in the Process Experimental Pilot Plant (PREPP). In addition to the SWEPP and PREPP TRU waste treatment facilities, the INEL is constructing a Waste Experimental Reduction Facility (WERF) to demonstrate efficient low-cost waste volume reduction techniques for low activity (< 10 mrem/h) beta-gamma waste. The WERF includes equipment for waste sorting and sizing, metallic waste melting, combustible waste incineration, and off-gas treatment. Brief summaries of these three facilities are given.
