The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) have established standards such as the NACE TM-0177-90 tension test and the NACE MR-0175-93 for safe operation of corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) in sour environments. Accordingly, the CRA strength for H{sub 2}S service has been limited to yield strengths of 690 MPa or hardness values of 22 HRC. Nevertheless, most information available on the SSC susceptibility of CRAs does not include the most recent versions of CRA and HSLA steels for applications in sour environments. Currently, there are numerous efforts aimed at developing improved grades of pipeline steels resistant to SSC in sour gas environments. Among these works, it has been found that the API grades X-60 to X-80 of pipeline steels are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HIC) in the absence of external stresses. In addition, the relative SSC susceptibility of HSLA steels is closely related to the prior thermal and mechanical history. Hence, in this work the relative susceptibility of an as-received X-80 pipeline steel to sour gas embrittlement was investigated.
