A family of fluorescent compounds, the polycyclic aromatic sulfonates, was evaluated for application in intermediate- and high-temperature geothermal reservoirs. Among the two-, three-, and four-ringed aromatic sulfonates that we investigated, only the naphthalene sulfonates were found to possess the desired qualities of thermal stability, delectability, and affordability. The unsubstituted naphthalene sulfonates were found to possess excellent thermal stability, qualifying them for use in geothermal reservoirs exceeding 300{degrees}C. The amino-substituted naphthalene sulfonates were found to be somewhat less thermally stable, but much more detectable and much more affordable.
