Title: Electrochemical oxygenation of livestock wastes

Conference · · Biotechnol. Bioeng. Symp.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6055275

This study examines in situ electrolysis of water for oxygenating aerobic fermentations as an alternative to mechanical aeration. Solids reductions in swine wastes of 60 to 70% were obtained, although evidence of inhibition was found. Current efficiencies, based on Faraday's law, from 70 to 100% were attained. Hydrogen production at efficiencies as high as 162 L/kW h were obtained. Increased temperature favorably affected the system. Optimum performance can be expected at higher temperatures and solids loading rates. It was determined that the process is technically feasible. Economic feasibility remains to be determined. 3 figures, 1 table.
