Homogeneous catalysis with ruthenium carbonyl complexes
Carbon monoxide and water were very rapidly converted to hydrogen and carbon dioxide by the water gas shift reaction catalyzed by ruthenium carbonyl complexes in the presence of amines. The data indicated that the active catalyst is pentacarbonylruthenium, although several ruthenium carbonyl species are present. A relatively simple reaction mechanism is proposed. Ruthenium carbonyls catalyze the hydroformylation reaction, and in the presence of base, unprecedented selectivity for linear aldehydes is observed. The active catalyst is believed to be an anionic cluster complex. Either carbon monoxide and water or carbon monoxide and hydrogen may be used. Nitrobenzene can be catalytically reduced to aniline by carbon monoxide and water in the presence of ruthenium carbonyl complexes and base. Molecular hydrogen need not participate in the reduction.
