The aerodynamic lift on a rigid circular cylinder of radius a in a nonuniform free stream is calculated to first order in the derivatives of the free-stream velocity, u(r). The lift per unit length, is of the order of the dynamical pressure 1/2rhou/sup 2/ times (a/sup 2//u/sup 2/) vertical-bardelu/sup 2/vertical-bar. The results have application to the motion of flux tubes in the Sun. Illustrative examples are provided in subsequent papers of this series.
