Linear position sensitive proportional counter

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Crystallogr. Assoc.; (United States)

The linear position sensitive detector described here is a gasfilled proportional counter with a long entrance window. It can detect X-ray photons or (with a change of gas mixture) neutrons that enter any part of the window. The energy resolution and quantum detection efficiency properties are the same as for small window proportional counters. Linear position sensitive detectors have the property of being able to record the one dimensional position at which an X-ray photon or neutron has entered the gas-filled detection chamber. Linear position sensitive detectors can either be straight or else they can be curved to take advantage of the focusing properties of various diffraction instruments. The greatest advantage of these detectors is the large increase in measurement speed compared to conventional small-aperture of ''point'' detectors.
