/sup 7/Li+/sup 12/C: Excitation of projectile and target states and single-nucleon stripping

Detailed cross sections out to 170/sup 0/ c.m. for elastic scattering and the excitation of states in /sup 7/Li and in /sup 12/C have been determined by bombarding /sup 12/C targets with 34 MeV /sup 7/Li beams and /sup 7/Li targets with /sup 12/C beams at the same c.m. energy. The present results show that the direct breakup total cross section for /sup 7/Li is about 25 times larger than the sequential total cross section to the (7/2)/sup -/ 4.63 MeV state of /sup 7/Li. In addition, single neutron and proton stripping angular distributions have been measured. The distorted-wave Born approximation is unsatisfactory for the excitation of the 1/2/sup -/ 0.48 MeV state of /sup 7/Li, the 2/sup +/ 4.44 MeV state of /sup 12/C, and the mutual excitation of these two states. Coupled channels calculations, using the rotation-vibration model, describe the excitation of states in /sup 12/C well and find K = 3 for the 3/sup -/ 9.64 MeV state. Poor fits are obtained to the projectile and mutual excitation data with coupled channels calculations. Finite range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations of single-nucleon stripping are in good agreement with the data. Extracted deformation lengths and spectroscopic factors are consistent with those from other studies.
