Passive shutter of radiation-colored leucosapphire for a ruby laser

Single-pulse ruby lasers with passive Q switching frequently cannot be used because of the lack of suitable shutters which combine a good long-term stability with a high radiation resistance and a high thermal conductivity. These requirements are not met simultaneously by organic dye solutions, by LiF with F/sup +//sub 2/ and F/sup -//sub 3/ color centers, or by KS-19 glass. In this letter we report the use of radiation-colored sapphire as a passive shutter for a ruby laser. The high radiation resistance and thermal conductivity of sapphire are well known. Preliminary measurements showed that the concentration of color centers in shapphire decreases by a factor of e in about an hour at 830 K, while at 300 K these centers exist for an indefinitely long time.
