Improved system of cleaning and preparation of a charge for coking

Progress in blast-furnace technology imposes stricter requirements on coke quality, especially on its physicomechanical properties. In addition, the prospects for improvement of coke quality at the coking plants of the South of the USSR are greatly complicated by the degradation of the indices of the coal shipped for coking. For example, at the coke works of the Ukraine in recent years there has been a significant reduction of the caking capacity of charges due to reduction of their content of fat and coking coals and increase in the gas coals. Another important factor is extensive usage of coals of other coalfields in the South. In this situation improving coke quality and providing consistent coke properties are largely dependent on fuller utilization of the capabilities of the washeries and improvement of their operation by close coordination of the washing and charge preparation processes and consideration of the features of coals of the different mine groups and types. Improvement of charge preparation technology by using group classification, differential cleaning, separation and efficient crushing of the heavy concentrate fractions and separate flotation of the well- and poorly-caking components permits an increase in the caking capacity and bulk density of a coal charge and an improvement in the physicomechanical characteristics of the coke.
