Modeling the uptake of SO/sub 2/ by vegetation

Conference · · Gen. Tech. Rep. FPL - U.S., For. Prod. Lab., Madison, Wis.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6050351
Transport of SO/sub 2/ is traced from its sources through the atmosphere to the effective sink within the plant. The model is based on the resistance analog to Fick's diffusion equation. At low ambient concentrations environmental parameters are shown to effect SO/sub 2/ removal. The model generates information on the uptake of a single leaf. Vegetative parameters include leaf and stomatal factors and LAI (leaf area index). Generalized values of LAI are used to estimate SO/sub 2/ uptake on a regional basis. The model is applied to calculate the SO/sub 2/ uptake in energy and mineral resource regions of the Western United States where ambient levels of SO/sub 2/ will increase as a result of proposed development.
