The relation between the generalized phase shift and semiclassical S matrix formulations of molecular scattering theory is discussed. It is shown that the classical limit of the generalized phase shift is the modified action. The set of coupled first order or ''trajectory'' equations provides an exact quantum formulation of scattering theory which leads smoothly to the semiclassical formulation.
