Carter plan: more oil seen, but users fear costlier natural gas

Industrial users fear they will pay higher costs for natural gas because of President Carter's plan to increase oil supplies by lifting crude oil price controls. While most users interviewed are in favor of decontrol, they were dubious that Congress will agree to a windfall profits tax. Revenue generated by the tax would be used for various energy research projects through a security fund. The danger, as some gas users see it, is that incrementally-priced gas pegged to number two and six fuel oil will go up faster than anticipated. The White House expects cooperation from commerical, industrial, and utility users to continue the trend toward more efficient energy use and the Administration will assist users who switch to non-oil fuels. Mandatory conservation steps will be taken only if voluntary actions are inadequate.
