Engine modifications and exhaust emission control: a survey and appraisal

Total exhaust emissions from existing engines can be reduced by use of smaller engines, by novel types of transmissions, by storage of the kinetic energy that can be recovered during deceleration, and by engine shutdown during deceleration and vehicle standstill. With the known emission spectra of applicable engines, the reduction in emissions can be estimated if driving patterns, transmission characteristics, etc. are assumed. There are several new engine processes that promise an improvement of the exhaust emission spectrum. The Texaco process has been developed far enough for meaningful exhaust evaluation. The one area that lends itself to study without the need of developing a special test engine is that of lean-mixture burning. Such mixtures can be ignited by an ignition cell, which can be attached to almost any engine. One might also fairly readily study the Baudry process, since it involves only simple changes that are external to the engine. Better homogenized mixtures in a conventional engine should also be studied. Diesel exhaust studies should be continued to get a clearer picture of what factors influence diesel emissions. The potential of fuel injection in conjunction with a standard gasoline engine deserves further study. Recent research has shown that wall quenching is the major source of hydrocarbon emission in conventional gasoline engines. The emissions from an automotive gas turbine should be determined. More information is needed on the distribution of emissions and emission-related materials in the atmosphere of cities outside of California. Since in Eastern cities the worst air pollution situations occur in winter, surveys should emphasize the cold season. Such information is needed to better gage the seriousness of the emissions of engines operating in areas other than California. 36 references, 10 figures.
