Thermal analysis at Mound in support of the explosive surveillance program

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6048715

Thermal analysis is widely used in support of the Mound explosive surveillance program. Either differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) or differential thermal analysis (DTA) is run on every explosive or pyrotechnic material. Other thermal analysis techniques such as thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermal mechanical analysis TMA are used to characterize these and other materials. The procedures are rapid and require only small amounts of material. The methodology used in thermal analysis, the database used to manipulate the data, and a comparison of DSC and bomb calorimetry are discussed. 2 tabs.
